3rd Quarter 2009
October 1, 2009
Dear Clients,
It is now a little over one year since the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, the takeover of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America, and the government’s involvement with AIG, Freddie Mac, and Fannie Mae. The markets hit lows that we thought were impossible. (Wow, what a slippery slope!) Now, the markets are hitting highs that we considered unthinkable.
Today, we are in a much better position than last year. The government is no longer bailing out the financial sector. Banks are on more solid footing. The fixed income markets, which account for short-term as well as long-term borrowing, are functioning more normal.
Unfortunately, though, we all succumb to the basic human emotions of Fear and Greed. Think back when the markets were at their lows, did you have fear they were going lower? Did you want to pull whatever was left and squirrel it under the mattress? Now that the markets have recovered over 50% from the bottom, are you feeling a little greedy? Are you thinking you should invest your money that currently sits on the sidelines? This short-term thinking is what makes most people lose in the markets.
Our investment philosophy is what we call conservative long-term strategy. We are firm believers that over time the markets will go up. We also know there are times when the markets will go down. It’s our job to refocus our clients on their long-term goals. Our approach is to look at your expenses (what you need to live on) and buy the appropriate investments to match them. Our job is to monitor your portfolio and keep you abreast of any needed changes.
So what should you do now? Invest your idle cash for the long-term. Think long not short-term. You cannot get ahead earning 0 to 1% on your money. CALL US for suggestions and strategies.
Sincerely,
Craig Rosenblatt, CPA Jay Rosenblatt, CFP©
