Recently I have received numerous calls from our clients asking why the Dow Jones, S&P and NASDAQ are all making new highs, yet their accounts have been going down in value. The answer to this question is quite simple. When you are building a baseball team, do you want a team full of pitchers? When you are building a football team, do you want a team full of quarterbacks? Of Course Not! You want to build a team of players you believe will perform the best at their given position. We build our portfolios the same way. We select the investments we believe will perform the best in their given sector all while trying to diversify the portfolio. Right now our income oriented portfolios are underperforming our growth oriented portfolios primarily because interest rates are rising and the price of investments tied to those investments are declining.
